By making the abstract concrete, art no longer retains any abstract quality, It merely announces... |
A constant striving for a state of abstraction and in turn produces more abstraction to pursue... |
It is this failure of the abstract that lures and hypnotises – forcing itself onto artists and demanding repeated attention.. |
The abstract draws artists towards itself as a semi-autonomous zone just out of reach...
|
It produces the illusion of a series of havens and places that might reduce the contingent everyday to a sequence of distant inconveniences... |
It is the concretization of the abstract into a series of failed forms that lures the artist into repeated attempts to “create” the abstract... |
Fully aware that this very act produces things that are the representation of impossibilities...
|
The abstract is a realm of denial and deferment – a continual reminder that varied acts of art have taken place and the authors were probably artists. |

"For the attention of the residents
of Pripyat!
The City Council informs you that due to
the accident at Chernobyl Power Station in the city of Pripyat the radioactive
conditions in the vicinity are deteriorating. The Communist Party, its officials
and the armed forces are taking necessary steps to combat this. Nevertheless,
with the view to keep people as safe and healthy as possible, the children being
top priority, we need to temporarily evacuate the citizens to the nearest towns
of Kiev Oblast. For these reasons, starting from April 27, 1986 at 2 p.m. each
apartment block will be able to have a bus at its disposal, supervised by the
police and the city officials. It is highly advisable to take your documents,
some vital personal belongings and a certain amount of food, just in case, with
you. The senior executives of public and industrial facilities of the city has
decided on the list of employees needed to stay in Pripyat to maintain these
facilities in a good working order. All the houses will be guarded by the police
during the evacuation period. Comrades, leaving your residences temporarily
please make sure you have turned off the lights, electrical equipment and water
off and shut the windows. Please keep calm and orderly in the process of this
short-term evacuation."

I was recently taken aback by how most paintings on display in the Arab Museum of Modern Art in Doha lack some (but not all) reflections and shadows.
I decided to provide some. I am hoping that the reflections and shadows in my photographs will eventually leave my works and attach themselves to the paintings in the museum.

Quest Object sculpture with candle detailed view of candle. Background: A2 rubbing.
candle installation View
Quest Object
consists of a sculpture/candlestick that holds a candle in the shape of the
artist’s head. The steel candle stick is spray painted in gray high gloss
lacquer.
Quest object is accompanied by a A2 rubbing. The rubbing shows a figure/knight (Widu
Gasti) holding two candles. A figure/selfportrait that occurs in several
works by Vaast Colson. The figure appears through its black background.
Seemingly lit up by the candles the figure is holding.
The signed and numbered rubbing (edition of 10) is stored in the diagonal tube that holds the candle.
Simular to the drawing, the actual candle functions as an object to enlighten its close environment. To light up the drawing that can be installed alongside the sculpture.
An object to be used when one is in search of - a a quest object.

Jonathan Monk's edition project consists of a series of 12 postcards, sent on a monthly basis over the 12 months of 2015. The first card is titled ‘A copy of Richard Hamilton Whitley Bay, 1965’. The following card then is titled ‘Another copy of Richard Hamilton Whitley Bay 1965’, and so on.
Every month, a new reproduction will be added. The first card (to be send by the end of January) shows a reproduction of the original card by Hamilton. The reproduction was made through an analogue photo technique- by use of a traditional medium format camera. The transparency that was made with this camera served as the basis for the first postcard.
Though, by the use of offset printing, each time
the card is reproduced there is a 3 mm bleed (printer's boarder cropping)
that will disappear. By repeating this process 12 times, each reproduction
of the previous card will be more and more in close up.

The edition is
produced by using a complete set (100 pieces) letterpress wood type. The
relative number of the letters in the set is based on the calculations of letter
frequency by Samuel Morse, the inventor of Morse code. The
text comes from Karl Marx, The 18th Brumaire of Louis Bonaparte:
'The social revolution of the nineteenth century cannot derive its poetry from
the past, but only from the future. It cannot begin with itself, before it has
shed all superstitious belief in the past. Earlier revolutions needed to
remember previous moments in world history in order to numb themselves with
regard to their own content. The revolution of the nineteenth century must let
the dead bury the dead in order to arrive at its own content. There, the phrase
exceeded the content. Here, the content exceeds the phrase.'

For an exhibition at Atle Gerhardsen in January of 1996, I proposed that I cut down the Christmas Tree for Trafalgar Square in London for 1995*.
After numerous letters and phone calls it was agreed that I help fell the spruce – following a short journey into the snow covered forest outside of Oslo I was handed a large axe and assigned a very tall tree. To document the outcome of this project I ventured down to London to capture the majesty of this public sculpture. On an extremely cold evening between Christmas and New Year, I stood on the steps of the National Gallery with a borrowed VHS camera (stuck on auto focus), no gloves and cold feet. The resulting video footage was not included in the final exhibition – eighteen years later, this edition, is still the only visible material associated this project.

PUBLIC POSTER PROGRAMS
Public Poster Program is a one year exhibition program that consists of 12 individual contributions.
Every month of 2016 an artist is invited to develop a work- a large industrial screen printed poster. Over the course of 2016 the posters will be on view, one by one in office like metal and glass vitrines that are installed in public venues. These vitrines function as autonomous exhibition spaces with a regular time-based program.
To take of, there
is a vitrine installed in the front window of MuZEE, Oostend (BE) and in the bar
of MuHKA, Antwerp (BE). Over time more vitrines will be installed in Belgium and
abroad. The program/exhibition will be on view simultaneously, in different
places.
Once the poster-program is completed it can be repeated endlessely, month after
month, year after year

PUBLIC POSTER PROGRAMS
Public Poster Program is a one year exhibition program that consists of 12 individual contributions.
Every month of 2016 and 2017 an artist is invited to develop a work- a large industrial screen printed poster. Over the course of 2016 and 2017 the posters will be on view, one by one in office like metal and glass vitrines that are installed in public venues.
