The Freedom Lamp liberates youth from the vicious cycle of
poverty and the impact of harsh prison conditions, by teaching them a craft and
helping them start a business. The metal bars of the Freedom Lamp represent the
tension between freedom and restraint, a recurring theme in the work of Atelier
Van Lieshout. The bars cannot stop the light from shining through the cage. It
reminds us of endless possibilities.
The Freedom Lamp is an exclusive art piece with social impact, from the YiPmade
design label and AVL-Mundo. YiPmade items are produced in the YiPmade Academy,
by youth that have come out of prison. The academy gives these youth the
opportunity to learn a craft and become an entrepreneur. This way they can break
the vicious cycle of poverty and start a life in freedom in which they can
contribute positively to society. The positive impact this program has on the
boys live is far greater than we could have ever imagined. YiPmade is an
initiative of Young in Prison International.
